Houston Police Uncover $10,000 in Marijuana

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Tuesday night the police raided three homes, resulting in 16 arrests and the seizure of $5,000 cash and over $10,000 worth of marijuana and other drugs, including ecstasy tablets. Sergeant James Williams said the raids were the result of a month-long investigation.

Those arrested include one person who is accused of being a major drug dealer in the Houston area. While only one pound of marijuana was seized, its value was exceptionally high because it is a high-grade hydroponic strain of the drug.

Everyone arrested for marijuana possession of less than one ounce is currently out on bail. Those who were charged with marijuana manufacture are being held in the Houston County jail. Whether or not they have selected their Houston criminal lawyers yet is unknown and the suspects have not been available for comment.

Judge Jackson Convicted of Official Oppression

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

We covered the story of Judge Donald Jackson and the DWI defendant Ariana Venegas last week, when we told you that Venegas accused Jackson of offering her a better Houston criminal lawyer in exchange for her agreeing to become involved with him romantically.

On Friday, Jackson was officially found guilty of the crime of official oppression and was sentenced to two years probation, 200 hours of community service, $4,000 in fines and 25 hours of mandatory state-approved legal ethics courses. He remains on administrative suspension for the time being. The judge hearing the case seemed to be personally offended by Jackson’s actions, stating, “we are all tarnished by your stupidity.”

Ex-Consulate Worker Charged With Stealing From Immigrants

Friday, December 4th, 2009

borman818A Colombian consulate worker was recently fired and arrested after bilking immigrants out of over $100,000. Maria Hurtado was offering paid legal services to help obtain green cards and other immigration documents that she could not actually help provide. 25 cases have been filed against Hurtado, who will be charged in the federal courts, as she is a Colombian national, legally living in Houston.

With over 95% of all immigration trials resulting in guilty verdicts, Hurtado will require a top Houston criminal lawyer if she hopes to not be tried, punished and deported for her crimes.

Anti-Gay Hate Crimes On The Rise

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

dbkingFBI statistics have shown an 11% increase in homophobic hate crimes in the last year. In general, hate crimes rose only 2%, but there was a dramatic increase in anti-gay crimes, particularly against young men. One third of the attacks involved physical battery, the rest involved property damage and intimidation.

This new report is all too timely for many local Texans, who are still grieving the death of 16 year-old Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado, who was recently murdered in Houston in what many believe was a hate crime against his sexuality.

“Coming just weeks after President Obama signed new LGBT-inclusive hate crimes provisions, the rise in reported hate crimes against the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community is sobering, whether due to increased reporting or increased frequency of the crimes, or both. We all must do more to send the message that these attacks are unacceptable,” said Jason Marsden, executive director of the Matthew Shepard Foundation.

Houston criminal lawyers, while sympathetic to the impact of these statistics, worry that an increased attention to homophobic hate crimes may result in more people being charged with hate crimes, even in cases when crimes were not based on a person’s sexual orientation. The issue remains one of the complex problems in the prosecution of hate crimes –how to tell what a suspect’s motives were at the time a crime took place.
